The Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) is having to recruit new examiners for the Pest Control Industry’s Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications.
Until recently RSPH‘s rules, which have been clear and strictly applied, have met Ofqual‘s regulatory requirements. Examiners were not eligible to mark, or set, any examination papers taken following courses on which they had taught. They could however, mark examination papers for courses they had not themselves taught .
However, Ofqual has recently revised the position following widespread adverse publicity when an examiner, for one of the awarding organisations specialising in GCSEs and A levels, revealed examination details during a training event for school teachers.
As a result, Ofqual has imposed new conditions on all awarding organisations. These conditions mean that no-one who has had any input into the development of an examination paper can advise trainers, or train candidates, for that qualification. RSPH has therefore decided that none of its examiners for any of its qualifications which are assessed by written examinations can also train candidates for these qualifications.

RSPH’s pest control examiners have therefore had to make a choice between examining or training. Training has frequently been the option selected. This has resulted in RSPH now having a number of vacancies for well qualified and experienced pest controllers to work as examiners.
