Rats cause closure of stricken Japanese nuclear reactor

A problem with rats has forced the operator of Japan”s crippled Fukushima nuclear plant to shut down power to one of the facility”s fuel pools.

It is not the first time Japan”s atomic energy industry has been foiled by a rodent and the continuing problems have prompted the UN”s nuclear watchdog to call for improvements.

In the latest incident the company was forced to shut off power to the number two reactor fuel pool after dead rats were found near critical electrical equipment.

There were fears the rats may have been electrocuted while gnawing at wiring for the cooling system, so power was shut down for several hours so workers could have a look at it.

This was the third time in five weeks that the plant had had to close due to rodent problems.
