Held on 7 November at its usual venue of the National Motorcycle Museum, professional pest controllers from up and down the country arrived at PestTech 2012. Although attendance may have been slightly lower than in previous years, all those who came were eager to find out what was new. The flow of visitors over the day was more staggered, which went down well with exhibitors, as they then had time to discuss matters in a more constructive manner.

    Welcome

As always there was a warm welcome to everyone by PestTech organisers – the National Association of Pest Technicians (NPTA). And as soon as the doors opened at 09.00, the visitors flocked in. All three exhibition halls were full to capacity with the exhibitors’ stands – see list here, and were soon to be joined by the exhibition visitors.

At Pest publications we were delighted to present our third annual Best Product Award 2012. Voted for by Pest readers, quite incredibly Barrettine managed to scoop this prize for the third consecutive year. Well done Barrettine for mustering all your customers – but maybe we will have to ban you in years to come! Find out which products featured in the line-up.

Outdoor events as popular as ever
As organisers, NPTA makes sure there is more to PestTech than just the exhibition, and as ever the practical outdoor events were as popular as ever – and fortunately it was a bright and sunny autumn day. Making his debut outdoors this year was Chris Venebales of Venebales Pest Control. He drew quite a crowd with his display of trapping.

All seminars and workshops full to capacity
The technical workshops were also well attended. A variety of pest problems featured – ranging from gulls to scent detection dogs to rats and mice. In fact there was quite a theme around scent, as Professor Jane Hurst from Liverpool University gave a fascinating presentation on some exciting new research into the scent signals of mice and rats – see report here.

The Pest Control News workshop took as its theme ‘Risk Mitigation Measures: Will they change the way we work?’ Whilst the Professional Woman in Pest Management (PWIPM) gathering heard guest speaker Janet Dixon call for more woman to get involved at the sharp end as pest management technicians – see report here.

The day was rounded-off with the popular Pest Control News dinner. Immediately before the meal, the 2012 Hall of Fame inductees were announced. See who was included.

    Watch-out for further coverage!
Readers should watch-out for further reports from PestTech 2012 in the next Pest magazine, due out in early December.
