Two men charged over death of 80 birds and a dog with pest control insecticide

Two men from Wanstead, London appeared before a district judge at Redbridge Magistrate’s Court on 29 June in connection with the poisoning of about 80 birds and a five-year-old German shepherd cross pet dog at Wanstead Flats in March 2010.

The former Newham Council pest controllers are accused of stealing a pest control product from their workplace and using it unlawfully near the lakes in the parkland.

As this is an active case going through the courts, all those involved are, understandably, not prepared to comment. It is believed the product involved is a well-known public health insecticide.

Both accused men face counts of using a pesticide without approval, two counts of poisoning animals, two counts of killing wild birds and one count
    of storing a pesticide inappropriately.

Terence Webb from Hainault also faces two counts of theft, whilst
Mark Page from East Ham is accused of stealing the product three times.

Both men have indicated they will plead not guilty. They have been ordered
to return to the court for summary trial on 3 August.

This is not good news for the pest control industry.

Pest will report further on the case when it is able to.
